The initial step is to report the damage.

If you’re looking for the Baggage Service Office, don’t leave the baggage claim area (baggage hall). It’s frequently found in the baggage hall next to the baggage conveyor belts that carry luggage. At this point, you can file a report for damage to your bag.

Make sure to have your passport and boarding pass easily accessible. Bring your damaged bag and complete the report. You will receive instructions on the next steps. There is a good chance that the airline will repair your bag at no cost to you. If your suitcase or bag cannot be repaired, Air Canada will provide a replacement.

If you notice the damage after departing the airport, at home, or hotel, you can lodge a claim to the Air Canada Customer Contact Centre within 7 days after arrival. Avoid bypassing this deadline. It is recommended to report the damage as soon as you arrive.

Should your checked baggage be damaged, you might be entitled to compensation.

Air Canada is responsible for this, and you could be eligible for compensation of up to €1300.

The airline is obliged to transfer this compensation to your bank account. You are not required to accept Air Canada compensation vouchers, air miles or coupons. Keep in mind, it’s not recommended to transport electronics, art, jewellery, etc., in your checked baggage, because Air Canada isn’t liable to compensate for the full value of such items, only up to the limit laid out by the Montreal Convention and its Conditions of Carriage.

If the damage results from a defect in the bag itself, you won’t be entitled to compensation. Also, Air Canada is not liable for minor damage such as scratches, small dents, and other (normal) signs of use on your suitcase. Regrettably, but that’s the reality of air travel.

Reimbursement of Expenses

You will not be able to have your costs refunded if your has been damaged.

However, if your baggage is lost and you have to buy replacements for essential items, you can claim reimbursement for your expenses. This is often referred to as delayed baggage compensation. After purchasing these necessary items, submit a claim with all the receipts, and Air Canada should reimburse you.

A claim for reimbursement should be made within 21 days from the day you receive your lost baggage. Remember, this only applies when your baggage goes missing or is delayed.

Is Travel Insurance Necessary?

No. You can definitely travel without it. Air Canada is required to ensure the safe delivery of your luggage under the Montreal Convention. This international treaty governs baggage transportation and applies to most international flights of Air Canada and several other global airlines.

However, having an insurance policy is always beneficial.

It could expedite your compensation process. After filing a damage report for your bag, get in touch with your travel insurance company to find out the next steps. Your travel insurance might compensate you for your luggage’s cash value or cost. Documentation received at the Baggage Service Office will be required to file a claim.

Be aware, that not all insurance policies include coverage for damage to your baggage. It’s crucial to confirm this beforehand to avoid any unnecessary stress and unpleasant surprises later.

Travel Prepared

Having a backup plan is always a smart move.

While baggage damages are not a common occurrence, they do happen.

It is highly recommended to pack an extra set of clothes and underwear in your carry-on. This way, you’ll be prepared in case your suitcase gets damaged. Also, remember not to pack valuables, cash, medicine, documents, and credit cards in your checked luggage. If your bag gets seriously damaged, such as having large holes or cracks, its contents may be at risk or you might lose some items.

Additionally, it’s a good idea to bring a foldable duffle bag. In case your luggage gets damaged, you can easily transfer your items to this bag. Even if you don’t need it for that purpose, the foldable duffle bag can come in handy if you require extra luggage space at the end of your trip.
